TRANSFORMING WORSHIP
Sunday Evening Services of Prayer and Worship
On the third Sunday of each month (fourth Sunday in September), gather for prayer and worship and deepen your experience of God in community, celebrating the gifts of two ecumenical communities that embody hope for the world. We will alternate between the service of chant and prayer as offered at the Taizé community in France, and the service of prayers for healing as held on the Scottish Isle of Iona.
TAIZÉ is a village in France where Brother Roger founded a community of men dedicated to modeling peace, ecumenical unity, and prayer. They have developed a style of prayer using chant, scripture, and periods of silence that is commonly referred to as "Taizé prayer." This ancient yet modern sung prayer touches heart and soul with melodies and words that have the power to evoke an overwhelming sense of God’s grace and peace.
In our Taizé gatherings, we will sing, listen, read scripture and offer our intentions in a spirit of communal silence and support. All are welcome to join their voices in prayer at this time when we and our world are in need of peace. No singing experience or talent is necessarythis is sung prayer, not beautiful performance. When weather permits, we’ll gather in the silos at the Place of Peace; other gatherings will be in the shrine on the way to the silos. (Watch for a directional sign when you approach the monastery.) Seating is limited so you may wish to bring a folding chair or cushion.
IONA is a small island in the Inner Hebrides group, off the west coast of Scotland. The island is partly made up of some of the oldest above-sea-level rocks on earth, and has been honored as holy ground for millennia. The Iona Community, founded during the Great Depression to bring hope into the lives of the suffering and provide a framework for committed discipleship, occupies a restored Benedictine abbey and church and offers unique week-long programs each year. There public worship in the abbey church is offered to God three times each day and the Service of Prayers for Healing is offered each Tuesday evening.
Our Iona services will reflect the original Iona Community’s belief that “God’s purpose for us all is a life of wholeness, as expressed in the life and teaching of Jesus. The ministry of healing is an integral part of our Christian witness.” This ministry recognizes that we are all in need of healing, and places the search for that healing into a social dimension. Participants pray for the world and for loved ones, laying hands on one another as the living Spirit is called on to enter each person present. You are invited to submit prayer requests by email to bpcosb@comcast.net . Gatherings are in the monastery chapel.
