FIRST FRIDAY RETREATS
Communion with God:

Women’s Mystical Experience through the Centuries

The words “mystic” and “mysticism” have taken many meanings--often vague or misleading--through the years. The simplest definition of a mystic, according to Evelyn Underhill (Mystics of the Church) is “one who has a direct intuition or experience of God.” For Christians, the mystic is one for whom God and Christ are a living presence, and who responds to that presence by basing life on a conscious communion with God. Augustine described the ideal: “My life shall be a real life, being wholly full of Thee.”

This year’s First Friday series will look at several women who lived this life and whose wisdom continues to speak to us today. We will hear about the life and times of each mystic, explore her thoughts, experiences, and writings, and consider some practical applications for our own lives.
